IP Telephony Monitoring

IP Telephony Performance Management

VoIP applications on enterprise networks present specific challenges for network operations and telecommunications teams. VoIP deployments demand optimal network performance to ensure an acceptable quality of experience for end users - unlike most data applications, VoIP is sensitive to latency, jitter, and packet loss. To successfully deploy and manage VoIP applications, IT operations teams need an integrated performance management system that VoIP Monitorprovides the metrics and visibility to deliver a superior VoIP quality of experience while ensuring network performance.

With SevOne IP Telephony Monitoring, IT organizations can monitor the quality of experience for their VoIP applications from the same system and web-based console that they use to manage their network performance and availability. The SevOne Performance Appliance Solution provides an agent-less all-in-one solution for monitoring, troubleshooting and performance analysis. By leveraging the SevOne plug-in architecture, all of the SevOne capabilities for polling, monitoring, alerting and reporting are available for VoIP call quality metrics.

The SevOne network performance management solution delivers complete and immediate visibility of key performance indicators required to:

  • Assess the networks ability to support VoIP and successfully manage and optimize performance, pre and post deployment.
  • Monitor and deliver a superior VoIP quality of experience while ensuring network performance.
  • Proactively monitor and troubleshoot any issue before it becomes service impacting.

IP Telephony Solution Capabilities

The following uses cases and workflow for IP Telephony monitoring are supported in the all-in-one SevOne Performance Appliance Solution.

VoIP Call Quality Monitoring

All of the SevOne capabilities for polling, monitoring, alerting and reporting are available for VoIP call quality metrics. Within a single report, the SevOne PAS can display call quality measurements against baselines, and provides threshold-based alerts. This gives SevOne the ability to provide MOS (mean opinion score) as well best and worst call reports without the need to deploy agents or deploy packet capture technology.

VoIP Phone Availability Monitoring via ICMP

To monitor the availability or up/down status of VoIP phones with SevOne, a device group can be created that includes all phones as devices, and ICMP monitoring enabled for the group. An alert can then be set for any member of the group that has an availability of less than 100%, for a given period of time. An overview report of the up/down status of all phones can also be provided via an Instant Status report

Network Performance Monitoring

Telephony call quality metrics can be linked and graphed with key network performance indicators, to understand how their VoIP application is impacted by network performance. Conversely, users can analyze the impact of their VoIP deployment on their infrastructure, including whether other applications are affected. This ability to analyze both network and VoIP performance from one system enables faster trouble shooting and problem resolution, and better teamwork and planning amongst the network operations and telephony teams.

Network Readiness for VoIP

IP SLA and Proxy Ping allow SevOne to measure response time from an end user perspective.  These response time measurements provide important data for organizations considering the rollout of VoIP. Response time tests will show the readiness of the network to support an application with little tolerance for latency and jitter. Furthermore, 90th and 95th percentile reports can be run to ensure that a VoIP rollout goes smoothly.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Call Manager) Support

SevOne provides a plugin to collect call statistics from Cisco Call Manager servers. This gives SevOne the ability to provide MOS (mean opinion scores) as well best and worst call reports without the need to deploy agents or deploy packet capture technology. SevOne’s agentless deployment model saves money and provides the reports that you need with an unmatched Total Cost of Ownership Model.

Avaya and SIP Compatible Systems

The SevOne Telephony plug-in collects call performance metrics directly from Avaya IP and other SIP phones via RTCP. RTCP (Real Time Control Protocol) is the protocol for transferring call control data between IP phones. As with any SevOne plug-in, it is possible to baseline and set thresholds and alerts for each call quality metric collected. Further, SevOne supports the aggregation of metrics based on domain (VoIP PBX), dialing extension, or destination extension. SIP compatible phone are available from companies like Aastra, Polycom, Linksys, Cisco, and others.
