Enterprise Wi-Fi – The Gift that Keeps on Giving

No, this is not a blog about which Wi-Fi vendor offers the best gift for the holiday season. But it is about Wi-Fi, the enterprise gift that keeps on giving… monitoring and management challenges to IT admins.

We can paint a picture about why Wi-Fi is important to monitor and manage using Cisco's Visual Networking Index (VNI) data. When talking about Wi-Fi it becomes imperative to understand the impact of wireless and mobile devices on IP traffic. According to the VNI, wireless and mobile device traffic will exceed wired device traffic by 2018. In 2018 only 39% of IP traffic will be wired. It is very much conceivable that all mobile device traffic will become Wi-Fi traffic within the enterprise based on growing liberal bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies. And when we consider BYOD, the per capita growth in connected device use – increasing from 7 GB to 17 GB in the 2013-2018 period – demonstrates a growing need for enterprise Wi-Fi monitoring.

"By 2018 Wi-Fi and mobile devices will account for 61 percent of IP traffic."

The VNI offers more data and projections on Wi-Fi that IT admins should note as they plan for the future. The VNI predicts a three-fold growth of Fixed/Wi-Fi IP traffic from 2013 to 2018. In hard numbers, global Fixed/Wi-Fi IP traffic will increase from 21.2 exabytes to 64.6 exabytes. Not familiar with exabytes? 1 exabyte equals 1000 terabytes or 1 billion gigabytes.

"Global Fixed/Wi-Fi IP traffic will triple by 2018."

What of the effect of applications across enterprise Wi-Fi? Here is what the VNI has to say about IP video in business. Global business IP video traffic will comprise 61% of business IP traffic in 2018, up from 36% in 2013, due to increased adoption of video communications. Similarly, Internet video will be 63% of all business Internet traffic in 2018, up from 38% in 2013.

"Business IP traffic will reach 8 million DVDs per hour in 2018."

So let’s sum it all up. Global IP traffic is shifting from wired to wireless devices, and growing steadily. At the same time the business pressure on enterprise Wi-Fi is increasing due to growing use of IP and Internet video along with user demand for quality of service in that video. From all sides, Wi-Fi will continue to stress the enterprise. Yes, Wi-Fi is the gift that keeps on giving. Fortunately, IT admins can accept that gift graciously with infrastructure management solutions from SevOne.
