Amadeus Consolidates Monitoring With SevOne

Amadeus is a leading provider of IT solutions to the global tourism and travel industry, with around 40% global market share of air travel agency bookings, servicing 690 airlines, 22 insurance companies, more than 50 cruise and ferry lines, 243 tour operators, more than 300,000 hotel inventory, 32 car rental companies and 100 railways. The company acts as a worldwide network connecting travel providers and travel agencies through a highly effective processing platform for the distribution of travel products and services, and as a provider of IT solutions, which automate mission-critical business processes, such as reservations, inventory management, and operations for travel providers.


Amadeus is one of the largest data centers worldwide fully dedicated to travel with more than 16 Petabytes of storage and 1.6 billion transactions a day. Amadeus processes more than 24,000 transactions and over 500,000 physical database access per second. For many years, the company had been using separate applications running on different operating systems to monitor devices via simple network management protocol (SNMP) and NetFlow data, in addition to a third self-developed and maintained solution to cover unsupported devices.

“It no longer made sense to monitor our IT infrastructure with multiple tools,” stated Axel Husch, Senior Network Capacity Planner. “We were unable to scale with the demands of the business, on-going maintenance required too many resources, and working in multiple applications presented usability challenges.”

The company also experienced issues with capacity projections and slow reporting. The network team is required to provide utilization reports to its engineering teams to enable them to manage capacity effectively, and provide adequate bandwidth for the critical services Amadeus provides its customers – both internally and externally.

“We need to be able to report to our internal users much faster and in real time. Our standard weekly reports were compiled on Sunday night. These reports were interesting on Mondays, less useful on Wednesdays and completely outdated on Fridays,” he added.

Network downtime directly impacts Amadeus’ revenue and – most importantly – could result in lost customers. Amadeus realized its existing tools no longer kept pace with requirements and couldn’t support its future goals, so they decided to consolidate all three tools using a single appliance-based solution, SevOne.


Amadeus selected SevOne as its sole IT management and reporting platform, consolidating its monitoring needs with an integrated view of SNMP and NetFlow data in a single user interface. SevOne was also able to integrate with other third party data through its open API. Axel explained, “It was essential to our business that SevOne could fully integrate with our existing infrastructure. Interoperability with existing systems was essential to our business, and allows our internal users to create the alerts and reports they need to maintain current operations and plan for future capacity needs.”

In addition, Amadeus selected SevOne because it was an appliance-based solution, which meant no longer having to provision additional hardware or manage external databases to get the job done. Every SevOne appliance is both a collector and a reporter, and its users can log into any one of its appliances and get exactly the same reporting interface. In the future, Amadeus can easily scale its monitoring and reporting capability by simply deploying another appliance onto the network within minutes.

Axel noted other helpful features, such as the ability to properly group devices, objects, calculation objects and synthetic indicators. Secondly, the sophistication of alerting and threshold flexibility to uncover deviations from normal within Amadeus’ IT environment is a valuable part of SevOne especially the use of rules based on device properties and or regular expressions to sort devices and objects easily.


The SevOne solution provides Amadeus with greater visibility of bandwidth usage and resource capacity. As a result of implementing SevOne, the company now manages more with fewer resources. Additional benefits realized to date include increased speed of reporting, greater automation, and vastly improved ease of use. “What used to take us a half of a day can now be done in seconds,” says Axel. “We actually have real-time reports that we publish to a URL, so all of our internal stakeholders can access the information they need, when they need it.”

Overall, SevOne has increased productivity and provided the company with a fast time to value. The amount of time, spent for administration and maintenance of tools went from one full time employee down to about whole day per week.

Many divisions within Amadeus now use SevOne regularly, a result of SevOne’s intuitive GUI. Axel reveals, “Many groups within Amadeus use SevOne now, as a self service, which gives them the information they need faster and reduced the workload of the capacity planning team.”

“With the sheer volume of business passing through our data center on a daily basis, there is a tremendous dependency on the network,” reflects Axel. “SevOne has helped Amadeus significantly decrease its exposure to risk.”
