Monitoring SNMP and NetFlow from the Same Platform to Improve Troubleshooting

Datasheet

A global Business Process Outsourcer risked losing customers due to its poorly performing network. Additionally, the network operations teams needed to consolidate multiple monitoring systems into a centralized reporting platform so they could overcome the "silo effect" of having multiple systems deployed.

Solution

This customer deployed the SevOne Performance Appliance Solution to monitor all of its network devices and servers, while also collecting NetFlow data for traffic analysis. SevOne provided a single pane of glass for all performance monitoring and reporting. Using SevOne consolidated the silos of data that existed previously.

SevOne Monitoring SNMP and Netflow

Operational Value

Central and regional network operations teams can quickly identify problems before they impact the business. The network operations teams now make informed decisions on how to react because they have removed their monitoring blind spots.

  • Spotting a capacity issue on an uplink - Within the first day of enabling SNMP monitoring in SevOne, they received performance alerts for high packet loss on their core uplinks. This indicated a clear need to upgrade the link and add capacity.
  • Using NetFlow to identify the cause of poor performance on the network - SevOne identified certain high utilization links between the home office and a regional office in South America. By linking the SNMP data with the NetFlow records in SevOne, the customer was able to resolve what traffic was causing the slowness. They identified that a backup job had not been completed and was consuming bandwidth during work hours.

Business Value

As an outsourcer who delivers services over the Internet this customer requires optimal performance at all times, or they risk losing customers to another provider. By consolidating their monitoring into a centralized platform and by leveraging multiple monitoring functions in SevOne to improve their troubleshooting, this customer reduced their risk of customer churn.
