DNS Poller

A brief video outlining how to monitor the DNS Poller using SevOne.

In this video, we're going to discuss how to enable the DNS poller within Sevone. First, start by navigating to the device manager page by going to devices and going down to device manager. You can search and filter by group, plug-ins enabled, or by a simple search string like I've done here, whereby I've searched for the device name local host. This is to illustrate an important concept about the DNS poller. In this instance it is not necessarily tied to the device that the poller is enabled on. What I mean by that is we're not going to be creating a DNS query or test against a local host. You can just logically associate DNS tests to whatever device you'd like. I think that will be a little bit clearer once we enable the poller.

First, start by editing the device and toggling the poller selection to DNS. It's currently disabled for this device, so I will enable it. Then, I need to edit the DNS information. This is currently blank, so I need to create a new object. As you can see, I am not entering the name local host here. Instead, I am testing that howto.sevone.com. is resolving. You get the indicators of availability and response time of the new object that will be created with this particular synthetic test.

I can create as many objects as I would like, and there's a few strategies you could use for your DNS poller. You can enable it in all the devices where you want to resolve those names, or you can pick any device, maybe local host, for example, the one that's doing self monitoring, and just tie all the DNS queries that you're going to be running with the Sevone platform and tie them logically to a single device. There's some flexibility there. I'm just going to simply hit return to edit, and then all you'd have to do is hit save. That will queue the device for rediscovery, and once that process kicks off, you'll have a new object or objects, depending on how many tests you're running, created using the DNS poller.
