In efforts to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus, city, state, and even some federal governments around the world have ordered the closure of all non-essential businesses. For many businesses, like hotels, restaurants, and bars, ‘closed’ means closed: shut down, lights off, doors locked, see you when we re-open, whenever that’ll be.
For lots of other businesses, however, closed means something else. Sure, their office locations and other facilities are closed, but these companies are far from shut down. They’re still open for business. The big difference is that most of their employees are now conducting that business from home.
From an IT perspective, that’s indeed a major change. Up until this crisis hit, most employees worked on-site and directly accessed the corporate network to do their jobs and keep commerce humming. Today, virtually all employees are working from home (WFH), generating network traffic, workloads and strains on their companies’ WFH infrastructures like never before.
