Elastic application workloads that have the ability to spin up and down based on user demand are now commonly delivered via public cloud infrastructure including AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. Software Defined Infrastructure, whether WAN or Data Center, now means that network infrastructure can be provisioned on the fly through software to provide reliable connectivity for user consumption of critical business applications and services. Up until now, the worlds of application and network infrastructure management were separate and distinct.

The past decade has seen a wave of innovation in the Application Performance Management (APM) space, where next generations of more powerful and accessible platforms like Cisco AppDynamics have arrived. These APM environments provide significant insight into user behavior and code level performance. Through the use of programmatic interfaces, these APM environments are starting to connect directly into policy engines for application automation.
But what about the network infrastructure? Traditional monitoring tools, which review event, alarm, or state information about the network, simply don’t provide enough information to drive decisions. Even traditional performance monitoring is not granular enough to enable this change. What is required is highly granular performance data at multiple layers of the infrastructure, from physical connectivity up to individual application transactions. Delivery of automated application services is a challenge that Verizon has undertaken and will be demonstrating at Cisco Live.
