The enterprise and service provider WAN landscape is evolving rapidly. Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) technology is changing the economics, reliability, and security of moving application data around the enterprise. This solution provides customers visibility into both their legacy and new WAN connections that they did not have before. By leveraging key collection technologies from SevOne, customers are able to see a complete picture of their performance - from legacy WAN MPLS private lines, Internet transport, LTE/4G and cloud applications connections managed via the Viptela SD-WAN solution. Using metrics and context information from all of Viptela’s APIs, SevOne provides understanding of what is happening within the infrastructure. Real time alerting when key performance indicators (KPIs) are violated, real time dashboards of the SD-WAN network, and related component performance, and historical / scheduled reports of how the infrastructure has performed over time are just a few of the features delivered.
This solution provides operational insight into the SD-WAN infrastructure that was not previously visible. The SevOne and Viptela solution combines best of breed technologies to provide customers a complete view of their SD-WAN infrastructure. The solution leverages multiple data collection methods including RESTful API, SNMP, IPFIX (NetFlow / Cflowd), and Syslog to provide a complete performance picture. SevOne is able to collect metrics that provide insight into the performance of the new SD-WAN and store this information for up to one year with no rollup of the data — nothing is reduced or lost to averaging. Real time dashboards and reports allow engineers and operations to understand the performance of their network and applications while application data is in flight. They are able to demonstrate the benefit of moving to a SD-WAN strategy by showing performance trends and application latency improvements. Dynamic thresholds on this data can be set to alert when changes have occurred in the SD-WAN or legacy network. Alerting might signify that an application is taking a different link due to congestion which is what the SD-WAN solution is designed to do or it might generate a helpdesk ticket for operations to investigate manually.
SD-WAN Monitoring Architecture
Once the Viptela vEdge routers are deployed and are being used to pass traffic, SevOne accesses the Viptela APIs to pull metrics at a fine granularity covering all devices across the entire WAN solution. SNMP, flows, and logs are all sent from the vEdge routers to SevOne directly. SevOne dashboards provide customers the ability see the Viptela data alongside the rest of their infrastructure data. Alerts can be configured to notify proactively at the first sign of service degradation.
A large-scale retail WAN deployment with hundreds of sites and over 30 critical applications is revamped to take advantage of the Viptela SD-WAN solution. The customer needed a way to understand the performance of their legacy WAN while migrating sites to the new SD-WAN. They also needed assurance that applications were performing the same or better at locations now served by the new SD-WAN.
